Occupational Health and Safety is a cross-disciplinary area concerned with protecting the safety, health and welfare of people engaged in work or employment. The goal of occupational safety and health programs is to foster a safe and healthy work environment.

This is ideal for those who wish to gain a qualification but don’t like to sit exams. Your employee needs to be working in a job with some health & safety responsibilities already because, instead of sitting exams they will collect evidence from their day to day activities.

Occupational Health and Safety is a cross-disciplinary area concerned with protecting the safety, health and welfare of people engaged in work or employment. The goal of occupational safety and health programs is to foster a safe and healthy work environment.

The Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) 3 in Occupational Health and Safety at SCQF level 7 allows candidates to demonstrate competence in job-related skills in their particular area of work and expertise.

This qualification covers areas such as making sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety, developing procedures to safely control work operations, safely controlling work operations, promoting a positive health and safety culture, and conducting a health and safety risk assessment of a workplace.

This qualification has been designed in partnership with Proskills, the sector skills council, to ensure relevance to the sector.

Mandatory Units – candidates complete all of the following:

  • Make Sure your Own Actions Reduce Risks to Health & Safety
  • Develop Procedures to Safely Control Work Operations
  • Safely Control Work Operations
  • Promote a Positive Health & Safety Culture
  • Conduct a Health & Safety Risk Assessment of a Workplace

Optional Units – candidates choose two of the following:

  • Investigate and Evaluate Health & Safety Incidents and Complaints at Work
  • Review Health & Safety Procedures at Workplaces other than Your Own
  • Supervise the Health, Safety and Welfare of an Individual at Work
  • Behavioural Safety in the Workplace
  • Manage Contractors to Ensure Compliance with Health and Safety
  • Develop and Implement the Health & Safety Induction Process
  • Manage the Environmental and Social Impacts of Your Work

We operate flexible methods of delivery which seek to work around learning styles and the personal & work commitments of both employee and employer.

This programme will start with a one day induction in our training room in Invergordon. This will be followed by a workshop one day a month for 6 months. All materials are also kept online so that if candidates are unable to attend they can still progress. Tutor support is provided throughout and includes a visit to the workplace.

Our tutors are occupationally experienced and qualified. They also have or work towards assessor and tutor qualifications to  ensure they can more effectively support candidates.

How does the funding work?

Skills Development Scotland are provided with funding by the Scottish Government to support organisations to have better qualified employees.

This programme is funded under the Modern Apprenticeship scheme. An employer will take on an employee or seek to develop an existing employee. They will then identify a training provider who have access to the Modern Apprenticeship funding and be able to deliver the programme.

Is there really no cost to my organisation?

SDS provide differing levels of funding for the age groups 16 to 19, 20 to 24 and 25 and over:

For employees 16 to 19: the programme is fully funded. There is no charge to the organisation.

For employees 20 to 24: the programme is partially funded. There is reduced funding. However, at the VLA we only charge registration fees of £125 for this age group.

For employees 25 & over: SDS do not provide funding for this age group. It can still be delivered by the VLA but the full charge is £1,500 per person.

How does my organisation access the funding for the training delivery?

As a National Training Provider for SDS we will access the funding to pay for the programme on behalf of the organisation. Employer and employee will simply be asked to sign some paperwork.
